Prostate enlargement (BPH): a science-based guide to long-term prostate health
By Chidi Nneji · Updated 16 October 2026 · Editorial standardsUpdated 16 October 2026. This evidence overview explains urinary changes and when to seek care. It is general information, not a diagnosis.
What should men in Nigeria do about a weak stream or frequent night-time urination?
Record when symptoms started and arrange a clinical assessment if they persist or affect daily life. An enlarged prostate is one possible cause, but infection, medicines, diabetes and bladder problems can also contribute. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine; blood in urine, fever or significant pain also needs prompt attention.
Does a weak stream always mean an enlarged prostate?
No. A clinician can review symptoms, medicines and medical history, examine you and decide whether urine tests, kidney checks or a PSA discussion are appropriate. PSA is not a stand-alone diagnosis. Taking a supplement before checking a new or worsening symptom can delay finding the cause.
What do studies say about prostate supplements?
Trials of saw palmetto have generally found little or no improvement in urinary symptoms compared with placebo. Limited evidence for beta-sitosterol and some other extracts does not prove that a blend containing them works, and studies of an individual ingredient cannot establish results for a finished product. Prescription treatments and other management options should be discussed with a clinician according to symptoms and risk.
| Option | What it can tell you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Symptom and medicine review | Helps identify a possible cause and next tests | Requires individual assessment |
| Prescription treatment | Has evidence and a clinician can explain benefits and adverse effects | Choice depends on your diagnosis |
| Botanical supplement | Some ingredients have been studied | Does not establish that PROSTAVIVE treats BPH or improves PSA |
